Why Huntsville
Huntsville is a city situated in the East Texas Piney Woods along Interstate 45, roughly 70 miles north of Houston. Serving as the seat of Walker County, it sits within the Houston-Galveston combined statistical area. The surrounding landscape features a humid subtropical climate, bringing hot, humid summers paired with cool to mild winters.
The settlement originated around 1836 when Pleasant and Ephraim Gray established a local trading post. Ephraim Gray became the first postmaster in 1837 and named the community after his hometown of Huntsville, Alabama. A site known as Cotton Gin Hill later became a key center for ginning and shipping. Huntsville is closely tied to Sam Houston—the military leader who led the Texas Army at the Battle of San Jacinto and served as president of the Republic of Texas, U.S. senator, and governor of Texas and Tennessee. The town also has a rich educational history; in 1883, it became home to the Bishop Ward Normal and Collegiate Institute, the fifth college for African Americans in the state. Samuel Walker Houston, an educational pioneer born into slavery, established the Galilee Community School here in 1907.
Visitors to Huntsville can explore a range of historic and cultural sites. The Huntsville Cultural District in historic downtown features historic architecture, public art displays, murals by artist Richard Haas, and homes crafted from recycled materials. Notable landmarks dedicated to Sam Houston include his grave, two former residences, the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, and a 70-foot statue named A Tribute to Courage created by David Adickes, which is visible from Interstate 45. The town also displays The Dreamers monument, commissioned in 1995 to recognize the contributions of the local African American community.
Outdoor recreation and specialty museums are key parts of the area's travel offerings. Travelers can visit Huntsville State Park or the HEARTS Veterans Museum of Texas. Specialized sightseeing options include a downtown walking tour, an art tour, and a prison driving tour. The city's largest primary employer is the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, which maintains its headquarters as well as multiple correctional facilities, including the Huntsville Unit, within the city limits. Huntsville is also home to Sam Houston State University, founded in 1879. Travelers can access the city by road via Interstate 45, U.S. Route 190, or state highways, by bus via the local Greyhound station, or by air through the Bruce Brothers Huntsville Regional Airport.
