Why Garfield Heights
Garfield Heights is a city located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, forming part of the broader Cleveland metropolitan area. Covering a total area of 7.29 square miles—comprising 7.23 square miles of land and 0.06 square miles of water—the terrain slopes from an elevation of 831 feet at the Cleveland border up to 972 feet above sea level at the municipal Justice Center. The entirely urbanized municipality functions as an established residential and commercial community situated just south of Cleveland.
The area was initially organized within Newburgh Township before being established as the Village of South Newburgh in 1907. It was renamed Garfield Heights Village in 1919 and subsequently incorporated as a city in 1930 after its population reached 5,000 residents. The city takes its name from Garfield Park, an nearby green space dedicated in honor of United States President James A. Garfield, who was born in neighboring Orange Township.
Visitors and residents have access to several local recreational facilities. The Dan Kostel Recreation Center, situated on Turney Road within the Civic Center complex, features an indoor ice skating rink as well as an outdoor swimming pool open during the summer months. In the northeast corner of the city along the border with Cleveland lies the Garfield Park Reservation, which is managed as part of the regional Cleveland Metroparks system. The Metroparks network also expanded in 2023 with the acquisition of Wargo Farms, a 45-acre property set aside to protect open space and accommodate walking trails and outdoor leisure activities.
Demographically, the community is home to nearly 30,000 people representing diverse ethnic backgrounds, including individuals of Polish, Slovene, German, Italian, Irish, and African-American heritage, with English, Polish, Italian, and Spanish being among the recorded spoken languages. Local education is provided by a public school system operating three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school, alongside private Catholic options including St. Benedict and Trinity High School. Media coverage for the area includes regional Cleveland television stations, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, and the weekly Neighborhood News-Garfield Heights Tribune.
On the economic front, the city features Highland Park, a corporate development formerly known as City View Center that was built on a former landfill. Following acquisition by Industrial Commercial Properties in 2020, the complex was repurposed to house facilities for businesses such as MPAC Switchback, MTech, Innoplast, and Thermoprene. Municipal affairs are governed under a charter established in 1956, utilizing a mayor-council system divided into seven wards, complemented by a local municipal court that handles cases across several nearby jurisdictions.
