Why Zaltbommel
Zaltbommel, also historically and casually referred to as Bommel, is a city and municipality located in the central portion of the Netherlands. Positioned in proximity to both the Waal and Maas rivers, the destination sits in a key geographical area in the heart of the country. The broader municipality encompasses 13 distinct population centres and recorded a total population of 29,447 residents in 2021.
The settlement has a long history, first appearing in written historical records under the name Bomela in the year 850. Official city rights were granted to Zaltbommel in 1231 and were later renewed in 1316. During the Eighty Years War in 1599, the city was surrounded by Spanish forces during a military siege before being relieved by an Anglo-Dutch force under the command of Maurice of Orange. In modern administrative history, the municipality expanded to its present size on January 1, 1999, following a merger that joined Zaltbommel with the nearby municipalities of Brakel and Kerkwijk.
Visitors to Zaltbommel will find a location deeply integrated with regional transportation links and Dutch literary culture. The area is situated close to the main highway route of the A2 Motorway, as well as the passenger railway line connecting Utrecht to 's-Hertogenbosch. The river crossing over the Waal, which has since been replaced by modern infrastructure, achieved widespread cultural recognition after being featured in the notable twentieth-century Dutch sonnet De moeder de vrouw by author Martinus Nijhoff.
Throughout the centuries, Zaltbommel has been associated with numerous prominent figures in industry, politics, and the arts. It is connected to the origins of industrial history through Gerard Philips and Anton Philips, the co-founders of Philips Electronics, as well as their grandparents Lion Philips and Sophie Pressburg. The area has also welcomed notable cultural events, such as the 1863 marriage of pianist Suzanne Leenhoff to artist Édouard Manet. Additional artistic and historic residents linked to Zaltbommel include military commander Maarten van Rossum, Renaissance humanist Caspar Barlaeus, statesman Elbertus Leoninus, illustrator Fiep Westendorp, and Dutch Golden Age painters such as Gerard Hoet, Warnard van Rijsen, Jan Soukens, and Johannes Vorstermans.
