Why Englewood
Englewood is an urban city situated in Bergen County, New Jersey, forming part of the broader New York metropolitan region. Covering roughly five square miles composed almost entirely of land alongside a minor area of water, it shares borders with several neighboring municipalities, including Teaneck, Tenafly, Fort Lee, Leonia, Englewood Cliffs, and Bergenfield. The unincorporated community of Highwood lies within its borders.
The region was originally home to the turtle clan of the Lenape Native Americans prior to European arrival. After Henry Hudson claimed the surrounding watershed for the Netherlands in 1607, the land became part of New Netherland, though geographical barriers like the nearby Palisades kept early development minimal. Following the English takeover in 1664, settlement expanded as English, Dutch, and French Huguenot families established homesteads in the area, which was then referred to as the English Neighborhood. Officially incorporated as a city in 1899, Englewood grew to a population of 29,308 by the 2020 census.
Throughout the twentieth century, Englewood was connected to multiple notable historical occurrences. It served as the location for author Upton Sinclair's intentional community, the Helicon Home Colony, in the early 1900s, and in 1951 became the site of the nation's first customer-dialed long-distance telephone call. The city is also where legendary coach Vince Lombardi began his career and where The Sugarhill Gang recorded the landmark hip-hop single Rapper's Delight in 1979. Visitors interested in local history can view several sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Engle Street as well as the John G. Benson, Thomas Demarest, Garret Lydecker, and Demott–Westervelt houses situated along Grand Avenue.
Outdoor recreation and ecological preserved spaces are key features of the city. The Flat Rock Brook Nature Center encompasses a 150-acre nature preserve established in 1973 within remnants of the Palisades Forest. The center features 3.6 miles of walking trails, educational displays, year-round tours, and a Butterfly Garden. Public recreational facilities are available at MacKay Park on North Van Brunt Street, which includes a swimming pool, an ice hockey rink, athletic fields, and a walking path.
Additional sports venues within the municipality include the Englewood Field Club, which houses tennis courts, a pool, and an outdoor hockey rink. The area's sporting history also includes the former Englewood Golf Club, which hosted the 1909 U.S. Open tournament.
