Why Danville
Danville is a city situated along the Vermilion River in eastern Illinois, serving as the county seat of Vermilion County. Located within the Wabash River Valley, the city sits roughly 120 miles south of Chicago, 90 miles west of Indianapolis, and 35 miles east of Champaign-Urbana. Interstate 74 passes through the southern section of the municipality, while Illinois Route 1, U.S. Route 136, and U.S. Route 150 intersect within the town.
Originally home to the Miami, Kickapoo, and Potawatomi tribes, Danville was established in 1827 on land donated by Guy W. Smith and Dan W. Beckwith. The community grew into an industrial center during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, supported by coal mining, manufacturing, and major rail lines. Abraham Lincoln frequented the town over an 18-year period while practicing law on the regional judicial circuit. His former associate's home, the Dr. William Fithian house where Lincoln once delivered a speech from the balcony, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and now houses the Vermilion County Museum.
The municipality is broadly structured into three primary areas: a historic downtown district, a northern retail corridor, and an eastern campus district that contains Danville Area Community College and a historic Veterans Affairs medical complex. Neighborhoods include West Downtown and the Lincoln Park historic district, which encompasses a 22-acre park and the historic Lamon House. Downtown features 18 public murals painted by international artists, the Temple Plaza gathering space, Palmer Arena, and the Vermilion County War Museum, located inside a former Carnegie library building. The restored Fischer Theatre hosts performance arts and displays historic exhibits dedicated to famous former residents.
Local recreational opportunities are closely linked to the region's geographical transformation. Former coal mining sites have been converted into lakes and natural spaces, including Kickapoo State Recreation Area and Kennekuk Cove County Park, while Lake Vermilion borders the city's northwest side. Cultural organizations include the Danville Art League, the Danville Symphony Orchestra, Danville Light Opera, and several theater groups. Sports fans can visit Danville Stadium to watch the Danville Dans, a collegiate wooden-bat baseball team.
Throughout the year, Danville hosts public gatherings such as monthly First Fridays downtown, summer concerts at Temple Plaza, the Vermilion River Fall Festival at Ellsworth Park, and June's Arts in the Park in Lincoln Park. Every July, the community hosts the Balloons Over Vermilion festival at the regional airport, featuring a hot air balloon flyover over Lake Vermilion. The area experiences average monthly temperatures ranging from 17 °F (−8 °C) in January to 86 °F (30 °C) in July, with rainfall peaking in June.
