Why San Cristóbal

San Cristóbal is a municipality and city situated in the western part of Cuba, falling within Artemisa Province since 2011. Encompassing a total land area of 934.9 square kilometers (361.0 square miles), the settlement rests along the foothills of the Sierra de los Órganos, also known as the Organ mountains. It is positioned approximately 92 kilometers (57 miles) to the west of Havana, the national capital.

The settlement was originally established during the Spanish colonial era by immigrants originating from Cadiz in Spain as well as the Canary Islands. Founded primarily as an agricultural hub, the community initially focused its economic efforts on the cultivation of tobacco. During the eighteenth century, local growers expanded their activities to include coffee production, benefiting from the fertile soil conditions present throughout the region.

San Cristóbal gained global prominence in October 1962 as a focal location during the Cuban Missile Crisis. On October 14, 1962, a United States Lockheed U-2 reconnaissance aircraft, piloted by Richard Heyser, took aerial photographs of a Soviet missile construction facility in the municipality. These images provided the initial photographic proof of the missile sites, prompting the United States to institute a naval blockade against Cuba and entering a diplomatic confrontation with the Soviet Union. The crisis was eventually resolved when Soviet missiles were removed and the naval blockade was lifted in 1963.

In addition to its agricultural roots, the city served as one of the endpoints for a historical military road constructed during the early years of the Republic of Cuba. For those interested in local heritage, the municipality is home to the San Cristóbal Municipal Museum, which officially opened to the public on May 31, 1983.

Demographic records from 2022 indicated that the municipality had a total population of 71,098 residents, comprising 35,641 males and 35,457 females. Among the inhabitants, 11,784 people, or roughly 16.4 percent, were under fourteen years of age. The majority of the population, accounting for 68.7 percent, resided in urban areas, while the remaining 31.3 percent lived in rural settings across the municipality.
