Why Agawam

Agawam is a city located in Hampden County, Massachusetts, set along the western bank of the Connecticut River directly across from Springfield. As part of the broader Springfield Metropolitan Area, the city encompasses a total area of approximately 24 square miles, including the distinct subsection of Feeding Hills. Notably, Agawam holds the distinction of having the lowest standard ZIP code in the contiguous United States, 01001.

The region was originally inhabited by indigenous Pocomtuc people who knew the village by names such as Agawam, speculated to mean an unloading place or fish-curing place. In 1636, William Pynchon purchased the surrounding land from the local Pocomtuc Indians. Over the centuries, the community developed through various local enterprises, including distilleries and woolen manufacturing. Today, visitors can explore local history through landmarks such as the historic Thomas Smith House in Feeding Hills, the 1889 brick Agawam Woolen Mill building on Elm Street, and the Agawam Historical and Fire House Museum.

One of the city's primary highlights is Six Flags New England, situated directly on the banks of the Connecticut River. Originating as a picnic grove in 1840 before evolving into Riverside Park, it has grown to become the largest amusement park in New England. For further cultural interest, a monument and statue dedicated to Anne Sullivan, the tutor of Helen Keller who was born in Feeding Hills, stands at the corner of Springfield and South Westfield Streets.

Outdoors enthusiasts can explore several natural features within the city limits. The 852-acre Robinson State Park offers open space with its entrance on North Street, while the western border of the city is bounded by the trap rock ridge of Provin Mountain. Reaching an elevation of 640 feet, Provin Mountain represents the highest point in Agawam and is traversed by the 110-mile Metacomet-Monadnock Trail, providing scenic hiking routes along the ridge.
