Why Allen Park

Allen Park is a suburban city located in Wayne County, Michigan, roughly 12 miles southwest of downtown Detroit. Covering just over seven square miles, the community forms part of the region known as Downriver. Surrounded by neighboring municipalities including Dearborn, Lincoln Park, Southgate, Taylor, Dearborn Heights, and Melvindale, Allen Park is widely recognized for its peaceful residential character defined by tree-lined streets and traditional brick homes. Over the years, its high quality of life earned it a place on Money Magazine's list of America's Best Small Cities.

The municipality traces its origins to 1927, when it was first incorporated as a village, later attaining full city status in 1957. It was named in honor of Lewis Allen, a wealthy lawyer and lumberman whose extensive landholdings encompassed much of the territory, alongside other notable early settled figures like Hubert Champaign and Edward Pepper. Over the decades, Allen Park developed a strong industrial identity tied closely to the automotive sector, with the Ford Motor Company establishing a major presence through numerous offices and facilities situated within the municipal boundaries.

Among the city's notable highlights is the Uniroyal Giant Tire, celebrated as one of the world's largest roadside attractions. Constructed as a non-production scale model, the giant structure originally operated as a functional Ferris wheel at the 1964 New York World's Fair before being transported to Allen Park in 1966. The city is also an active sports destination; since 2002, it has hosted the headquarters and primary training facility for the Detroit Lions football team. Furthermore, Allen Park is home to Thunderbowl Lanes, a historic bowling center that has regularly hosted top-tier professional tournaments, including several Professional Bowlers Association World Series events and USBC Masters competitions.

Travelers and residents easily navigate the area via several major highway corridors. Interstate 75 cuts through the southeastern corner, Interstate 94 spans the northern district, and State Route M-39, an eight-lane boulevard known as Southfield Road, traverses the community diagonally. For dining and retail needs, the city features the Fairlane Green shopping center, which opened in 2006. The community is served by multiple educational institutions, including the Allen Park School District, Melvindale-Northern Allen Park Public Schools, and local private schools such as Inter-City Baptist School and St. Frances Cabrini Schools.
