Why New Iberia
Situated in the Acadiana region of southern Louisiana, New Iberia serves as the parish seat and central municipality of Iberia Parish. Positioned roughly 21 miles southeast of Lafayette along Bayou Teche, the city covers roughly 10.6 square miles of land at a low elevation slightly above sea level. It experiences a subtropical climate marked by above-average rainfall, featuring mean annual temperatures ranging from lows near 59.4 degrees Fahrenheit to highs around 79.1 degrees Fahrenheit.
The community traces its origins to the spring of 1779, when a group of around 500 Spanish colonists led by Lieutenant Colonel Don Francisco Bouligny settled near Spanish Lake and Bayou Teche. Called Nueva Iberia by Spanish founders, Nouvelle Ibérie by French speakers, and New Town by later English arrivals, the name New Iberia was formally recognized by the postal service in 1814 and codified by the state legislature in 1847. The town became the parish seat in 1868. Historic municipal landmarks include Bouligny Plaza—the site of a courthouse finished in 1884—and the current parish courthouse constructed in 1940 two blocks from the downtown commercial center.
Visitors to New Iberia can explore several historic properties and cultural institutions. Shadows-on-the-Teche is a historic former plantation home preserved by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In town, the Bayou Teche Museum showcases regional history, industry, and the final studio of artist George Rodrigue. The historic Conrad Rice Mill, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has produced rice since 1912 and provides public tours. Nearby Jefferson Island features the Victorian-era Joseph Jefferson House, botanical gardens, a nursery, and a rookery.
The surrounding geography features unique natural attractions and bodies of water. Avery Island contains North America's oldest operating salt mine—in use since 1862—as well as rock salt deposits, the Tabasco sauce production facility, and the botanical preserve and bird sanctuary known as Jungle Gardens. Nearby lakes include Spanish Lake, also known as Lake Tasse, and Lake Peigneur, which converted from a shallow freshwater lake into a deep saltwater lake after a 1980 salt mine and drilling accident connected it to the Gulf of Mexico.
Annual events highlight local heritage, food, and farming, including the Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival held in September to celebrate the local sugar harvest. The city also hosts El Festival Español de Nueva Iberia, the Books Along the Teche Literary Festival in April, and the World Championship Gumbo Cook-Off in October. New Iberia is accessible via U.S. Highway 90, Amtrak's Sunset Limited passenger train line, general aviation at Acadiana Regional Airport, and commercial flights at nearby Lafayette Regional Airport.
