Why Heerenveen
Heerenveen is a town and municipality located in the province of Friesland (Fryslân) in the northern portion of the Netherlands. Positioned to the southeast of Sneek and to the southwest of Drachten, it holds the distinction of being the oldest peat canal village in the country. Though it ranks as the fourth-largest populated center in Friesland, it is not listed among the province's traditional eleven cities, as it historically lacked official city rights. Over time, the expanding oval-shaped town has merged with several neighboring surrounding villages, including Oudeschoot, Nieuweschoot, Oranjewoud, Nijehaske, De Knipe, and Terband.
Established in 1551 by three lords, the settlement was originally created to harvest peat for fuel, which inspired its name from the words for lord and peat. During the nineteenth century, the community expanded as a substantial middle class joined its wealthier inhabitants. The presence of the nearby Oranjewoud estate contributed to the town acquiring the nickname "The Frisian Hague." Historically characterized by a long, narrow layout running north to south between a railway line and a highway, Heerenveen began expanding westward toward the Engelenvaart canal in the 1970s before growing toward the east in the twenty-first century.
Heerenveen is widely recognized for its high-level sports facilities. It is home to the Abe Lenstra football stadium, built with a seating capacity that surprisingly exceeds the entire population of the town itself. This venue hosts the top-tier Eredivisie club SC Heerenveen. Another key feature of the town's athletic infrastructure is the Thialf speed skating arena, one of the earliest indoor 400-meter ice rinks ever constructed. Thialf hosts international speed skating events, serves as the home ice for the Heerenveen Flyers ice hockey team, and is slated to host long track speed skating events for the 2030 Winter Olympics. The town also features the Sportstad complex, which incorporates a swimming pool, a gymnastics hall, and stadium extensions.
Cultural attractions in the area include Museum Heerenveen, which focuses on local history and heritage, and Museum Belvédère, dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Visitors exploring the town can also view Welgelegen, also known as Tjepkema's Molen, which stands as the sole surviving windmill out of seventeen that once operated in the area.
Travelers can access Heerenveen via the main national rail network at Heerenveen railway station, located along the Leeuwarden–Zwolle line. Driving to the area is facilitated by a cloverleaf highway interchange connecting the A7 and A32 motorways. Local waterways, such as the Heeresloot, New Heerenveen Canal, and the Engelenvaart, accommodate pleasure craft.
