Why Dübendorf
Dübendorf is a Swiss municipality and suburban city situated in the district of Uster within the canton of Zürich. Positioned roughly ten kilometers northeast of the city of Zürich, it ranks as the fourth-most populous city in the canton. Geographically, Dübendorf lies in the Glatt Valley on the northern slopes of the Adlisberg, with the Glatt River bisecting the area as it flows from the nearby Greifensee to the southeast. The municipality also encompasses small settlements such as the hamlets of Gockhausen and Geeren.
Human activity in the area dates back to prehistoric times, supported by archaeological discoveries of Stone Age and Bronze Age items, alongside grave artifacts from between 1400 and 700 BCE. First recorded under the name Tuobilindorf in 946, the village was historically tied to the Reichenau Abbey on Lake Constance during the eighth century. Notable historic features within municipal borders include the site of the former Schyterburg castle from the tenth or eleventh century, as well as the ruins of Dübelstein Castle. Positioned on the Adlisberg, Dübelstein was home to fifteenth-century Zürich mayor Hans Waldmann prior to its destruction by fire in 1615; its excavated foundation remains are preserved as a listed public landmark.
The town offers a compact design that visitors can readily explore on foot, with a walk from one side of the city to the other taking approximately thirty minutes. Beyond the riverfront and city center, a major attraction is the military aviation museum, which showcases historic aircraft, educational displays on flight control systems, and two operational vintage Junkers Ju 52 planes used for sightseeing excursions. In addition to its aviation heritage, Dübendorf serves as a key scientific hub, hosting the Empa materials research institute, the Eawag aquatic science institute, and the Swiss Air Force Aeromedical Center.
Reaching Dübendorf is straightforward due to its integration into regional public transportation networks. The municipality is connected by local bus lines and the Zürich S-Bahn rail system, with stops at both Dübendorf and Stettbach railway stations. Frequent train services transport passengers to central Zürich in about ten to thirteen minutes, while also providing direct transit to Winterthur and other locations across the canton.
