Why Washington
Washington is a municipality located in the south-central region of Washington County, Utah. Positioned as part of the broader St. George Metropolitan Area, it functions as a rapidly growing suburban community and ranks as the second-largest city within the county. In recent years, local officials have promoted the usage of the name "Washington City." The municipality spans a overall area of 32.5 square miles, almost entirely composed of land except for a minor 0.07 square miles of water surface.
The history of the area traces back to its settlement by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. A group of 28 families was sent to establish a cotton-growing mission in the region. This settlement effort was directed by Robert Dockery Covington, a former plantation owner from Mississippi, along with other early settlers originating from the American Southeast. Because the early pioneers cultivated cotton that was processed at a local mill, the surrounding area acquired the regional moniker "Utah's Dixie," referencing the traditional nickname for the southeastern United States. The municipality itself was formally named in honor of United States President George Washington.
Today, Washington serves as a residential suburb adjacent to St. George. The community features distinct geographic areas and neighborhoods, including old town Washington, Buena Vista, Green Springs, and Washington Fields. The local municipal government operates under a mayor, five city council members, and a city manager who oversees daily administrative functions.
Educational resources throughout the city are administered by the Washington County School District. Local public educational facilities include Washington Fields Intermediate School, Crimson Cliffs Middle School, and Crimson Cliffs High School. Additionally, northern sectors of the city, including old town and the Buena Vista and Green Springs neighborhoods, fall within the attendance boundaries for nearby schools located in St. George, such as Pine View High School. The public charter facility St. George Academy also operates within the city limits, catering to secondary students from Washington and neighboring communities.
