When dry rot rendered the lodge structurally irreparable, demolition work revealed the long-forgotten castle hidden within. Today, it has been beautifully restored and stands as part of the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre. Thought to date back to the 1430s, the castle's dimensions conform to a 15th-century government policy that offered ten pounds to landowners who built a castle for their own safety.
