Welcome to Berlin's historic Gendarmenmarkt, where you will find the French Cathedral—officially the French Church of Friedrichstadt (Französischer Dom). Despite its popular name, it was never the seat of a bishop; the word "Dom" references the French "dôme," echoing the francophone era of King Frederick the Great. Originally built between 1701 and 1705 by Louis Cayart and Abraham Quesnay for the city's Huguenot community, the church was modeled after a destroyed temple in Charenton-Saint-Maurice, France.

Carl von Gontard later added the striking adjacent domed tower in 1785 to embellish the square. Although heavily damaged during World War II, the structure was rebuilt between 1977 and 1981. When you visit, you can explore a fascinating blend of history and architecture.

Inside, enjoy the sober yet decorative Calvinist aniconistic interior refurbished by Otto March in 1905, complete with an organ originally introduced in 1753. Head up to the domed tower's public observation deck for a breathtaking panoramic view of the downtown area, check out the Berlin Huguenot museum inside the tower, or stop by the restaurant located in the basement beneath the sanctuary. Still active today, it hosts church services, concerts, and conventions.
