Why Abidjan

Abidjan is the largest city and primary economic hub of Ivory Coast, situated along the Ébrié Lagoon on the Gulf of Guinea in southeastern West Africa. With a population exceeding six million, it stands as the most populous French-speaking urban center in the region. Although Yamoussoukro was named the official political capital in 1983, Abidjan retains its status as the nation's financial heart, retaining numerous state institutions and all foreign diplomatic embassies.

Originally a small Atchan fishing community, the site was selected by French colonial authorities in 1898 as a safer alternative to Grand-Bassam following yellow fever outbreaks. Local tradition attributes the city's name to an Ebrié phrase meaning "I've just been cutting leaves," uttered during a language misunderstanding with an early explorer. Abidjan grew rapidly into a trade crossroads after adding a railway terminus and wharf, officially becoming the colonial capital in 1934. The completion of the 15-meter-deep Vridi Canal in 1951 linked the lagoon directly to the sea, turning the city into a prominent maritime port and financial hub.

The metropolitan area is split by the lagoon into northern and southern halves, joined by major modern bridges that trace their route back to a original floating bridge built in 1931. Le Plateau forms the central business district and administrative core, characterized by high-rise architecture constructed during post-independence growth. To the north lies Cocody, an upmarket residential district known for housing foreign diplomats, the French embassy, and luxury residences. Other key districts include the commercial area of Adjamé, the historic southern suburb of Treichville, and Port-Bouët, which hosts the airport and maritime facilities.

Notable landmark structures within the city reflect its modern history and architectural development. St. Paul's Cathedral, a landmark designed by Italian architect Aldo Spirito, was inaugurated with a groundbreaking by Pope John Paul II in 1980 and completed in 1985. Another recognized modern landmark is the expansive Hotel Ivoire, famous for long featuring an indoor ice-skating rink.

Abidjan experiences a tropical wet and dry climate bordering a monsoon climate, characterized by relative humidity levels remaining above 80 percent year-round. The city experiences two distinct wet periods, with a major rainy season running from March through July and a shorter one from September to December. Dry conditions occur during January, February, and August. Driven by the marine Benguela Current, August is the coolest month of the year, bringing average temperatures down to 24.5 degrees Celsius (76.1 degrees Fahrenheit).
