Why Akron

Akron is a major city and county seat in Summit County, Ohio, located in the northeastern region of the state along the Little Cuyahoga River. Situated approximately 40 miles south of Cleveland and 39 miles south of Lake Erie on the Glaciated Allegheny Plateau, the city covers roughly 62 square miles. Its topography features rolling hills and varied terrain, with the historic Ohio and Erie Canal passing through the area to divide its eastern and western portions.

The community was established in 1825 by Simon Perkins and Paul Williams at the crest of the Ohio and Erie Canal, deriving its name from the Greek word for summit. Early growth was driven by canal transportation connecting the settlement to regional markets. Incorporated as a village in 1836 and later as a city in 1865, Akron expanded rapidly during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a dominant center for rubber and tire manufacturing. Dubbed the Rubber Capital of the World, it served as the headquarters for major tire companies and became a hub for airship development.

Today, Akron retains its industrial legacy while transitioning into a hub for biomedical research, healthcare, education, and polymer science. Known for its concentration of polymer-related businesses and research initiatives, the city is home to the University of Akron, which operates specialized facilities such as the Goodyear Polymer Center. The local economy and public services are further supported by major medical institutions, including Akron Children's Hospital and Summa Health.
