Located in the Al-'Ashara region of Basra, Iraq, the Al-Maqam Mosque offers a fascinating journey into regional history and architecture. The site's roots as a shrine trace back to 772 CE, established when Ali al-Ridha, the eighth Shia imam, visited Basra from Medina. The present mosque was constructed by the Ottomans in 1754 CE, making it one of the largest mosques of its era.

Built from brick in an older Islamic architectural style, the complex spans 600 square metres (6,500 sq ft) with a haram capable of hosting 500 worshipers. When you visit, you will marvel at its striking 25-metre (82 ft) minaret and the beautiful blue-painted dome adorned with inscriptions of verses from the Dhikir al-Hakim. Renovations in 1922 added an outer wall to the courtyard, fixing the inner wall and directly connecting the site to the Shatt al-Arab.

You can also explore two adjacent libraries: a first-floor space storing Quran and dawah books, and the second-floor Library of Imam Ali bin Musa al-Ridha. Whether you are drawn to its divided history or its Ottoman-era craftsmanship, this historic sanctuary offers an authentic look into Basra's spiritual heritage.
