Mosque Scorpio

When you visit Basra, Iraq, you can discover the historic Al-Ajbal Mosque, also known as the Al-Aqrab Mosque or Al-Saghir Mosque of Manawi Lajim. Located in the Al Amitahiyah district of the Manawi Lajim neighbourhood near Abu al-Khaseeb in the Basra Governorate, this site offers you a fascinating glimpse into local heritage. Originally constructed in the late fourteenth century as a mud brick structure, the building was later rebuilt with clay brick and plaster before being extensively remodelled in 1998 in a modern Iraqi style.

Reconstructed through funding from philanthropic businessman Khalil al-Aqrab, and later maintained in 2001 by philanthropist Sharqiyah Ahmad al-Naami, it can accommodate at least 150 worshippers. As you enter through the wooden door, you will see the prayer hall, which measures 7 metres (23 ft) long and 15 metres (49 ft) wide with a roof supported by four large pillars. You can also inspect the platform next to the qibla, which is supported by five curved concrete columns.

Facing this platform, you will observe a massive assembly area measuring 20 metres (66 ft) long and 82 metres (269 ft) wide.
