Both the street and the venue derive their name from the seventeenth-century Dutch artist Albert Cuyp. Recognized as the busiest trading venue in the country and claiming the title of Europe's largest daytime market, it serves as a central point of interest for visitors to the city.

The origins of the market trace back to an informal assembly of pushcarts and street vendors. By the early twentieth century, the growing volume of informal trade prompted municipal action. In 1905, local authorities established a formal market that initially operated exclusively on Saturday evenings. The event transitioned into a daytime market operating six days a week in 1912. Although vehicles were historically permitted on the street alongside vendors, the road is now entirely blocked to vehicular traffic during operating hours.

Merchants at the market supply a wide assortment of goods. Standard items include fresh produce, fruits, and fish, alongside non-perishable merchandise such as apparel and cameras.
