Located right in the centre of Amsterdam, Natura Artis Magistra—commonly known as Artis—is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and the fifth oldest operating zoo in the world. Founded in 1838 on the historic Middenhof estate in the Plantage district, this unique space functions as both a zoo and a botanical garden. As you explore the grounds, you will discover an incredible mix of nature, science, and history.
Artis features an aquarium, a planetarium, an arboretum, Micropia, and the Groote Museum. The site also boasts 27 historically significant listed buildings, bridges, and ponds, most of which are still thoughtfully utilized as animal enclosures today. Notable historic structures include the 1882 aquarium building—which displays part of the zoo's art collection alongside the 1926 Heimans-diorama—as well as the wolf house and the Masman Garden House.
Alongside live animal habitats, Artis houses a library with 20,000 books, 3,000 manuscripts, and 80,000 animal prints under the special collections of the University of Amsterdam. Whether you are wandering past historic enclosures or visiting modern facilities, Artis offers a memorable look at the intersecting worlds of zoology, botany, art, and architecture in the heart of the city.
