Step back in time at the Alcázar de Colón, the first fortified European palace built in the Americas and now the most visited museum in Santo Domingo. Nestled in the historic Ciudad Colonial, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this impressive structure was built between 1511 and 1514 for Diego Columbus, the firstborn son of Christopher Columbus. Constructed from coralline blocks and coral rock masonry on a plot overlooking the Ozama River, the palace served as a governor's mansion and family home for three generations of the Columbus family.

Architecturally, it presents a predominantly Gothic style paired with Renaissance influences, especially in its arcades. When you visit, you will explore the 22 remaining rooms of what was once a 55-room residence. Now home to the Museo Alcázar de Diego Colón, the site displays a remarkable collection of European late medieval and Renaissance art, period furniture, and historic artwork acquired in the 1950s.

You can wander through its historic spaces with a self-guided portable audio speaker tour available in multiple languages to learn about each room's original function and discover its fascinating past, which includes being looted by the British pirate Sir Francis Drake in 1586.
