Located on a hill within the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the Monasterio de San Francisco is one of the city's most important historic ruins. Built between 1508 and 1560 following the arrival of Franciscan fathers—and initiated under Nicolás de Ovando—it holds UNESCO World Heritage recognition as the very first and oldest monastery constructed in the Americas.
As you explore these protected historic grounds, you will discover a site shaped by centuries of dramatic history, including plundering by English pirate Francis Drake in 1586, military usage during the 1809 Siege of Santo Domingo, and damage from severe earthquakes and hurricanes, such as the 1930 San Zenón cyclone.
