Why Alquízar

Alquízar is a municipality and town situated in the southeastern corner of Cuba's Artemisa Province. Positioned to the southwest of San Antonio de los Baños and to the west of Güira de Melena, it covers a total land area of 193 square kilometers (75 square miles).

The community traces its origins back to 1616, when it was first recorded as a coffee estate belonging to Don Sancho de Alquízar, from whom the town takes its name. A military garrison was subsequently set up at the site in 1826, and the settlement officially achieved municipal status in 1879.

Administratively, the municipality is organized into popular councils, which comprise Norte, Dagame, Mayorquín Sur—where the main town of El Mayorquín is located—and Pulido - Guanímar. Historically, the area was partitioned into several districts known as barrios, consisting of Guanímar, La Paz, San Andrés, Tumbadero, and the municipal capital of Pueblo.

As of 2022, Alquízar was home to a population of 33,510 residents, giving the municipality an average human density of approximately 170 inhabitants per square kilometer (440 per square mile).
