Step into ancient history when you explore Anchiale, a historic city of ancient Cilicia located in modern-day Mersin, Turkey. Inhabited across the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine eras, this intriguing destination carries deep ties to antiquity. According to the ancient geographer Strabo, Anchiale was constructed by Sardanapalus, the last king of Assyria, whose tomb was also claimed to rest here.

Alternatively, mythic traditions suggest the settlement was founded by an eponymous ruler of the same name. History buffs will appreciate knowing that Alexander the Great himself conquered the city right before his famous Battle of Issus. While British captain Francis Beaufort and most historians identify Anchiale with Karaduvar (a neighborhood in Mersin), you should set realistic expectations: the surviving physical structures are quite limited for a historically significant ancient city.

When you visit today, you can see a tumulus, several ancient house ruins, and an aqueduct from the original city. Additionally, you will find a preserved bath mosaic dating back to Roman times. It is a unique stop where you can contemplate thousands of years of shifting ancient empires in Cilicia.
