When you visit Lyon, France, you cannot miss the Ancient Theatre of Fourvière, a remarkable Roman theatre standing proudly on the hill of Fourvière. Situated at the very center of what was once the Roman city, this grand landmark forms an essential part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that protects Lyon's historic center. As you explore the grounds, you will marvel at the impressive architectural evolution of a venue that was constructed in two distinct phases.

The initial structure was built around 15 BC right next to the hill, featuring a 90-meter (98-yard) diameter. Later, at the beginning of the second century, final construction expanded the space by adding a final section for the audience. This expansion increased its overall diameter to 108 meters (118 yards) and allowed it to accommodate up to 10,000 people.

Today, while you will primarily experience it as a fascinating tourist site, the ancient theatre still thrives as an active cultural venue. If you time your trip well, you can experience its artistic spirit firsthand, as the venue proudly hosts the Nuits de Fourvière festival each year right within these historic stone ruins.
