Founded in 859–860 by Maryam bint Mohammed bin Abdullah al-Fihri alongside Andalusi refugees fleeing Cordoba, this striking site anchors a district rich with refugee history. When you visit, pay close attention to the prominent square minaret, constructed in 956 under the patronage of Cordoba’s Umayyad caliph, Abd al-Rahman III. You will also marvel at the monumental northern gate, an impressive entrance added during a major 13th-century Almohad reconstruction, decorated with vibrant zellij tiling and an intricate carved wooden canopy. Inside the courtyard, you can admire an ornate fountain later renovated by Sultan Moulay Isma'il, alongside historical additions built during the Marinid dynasty, such as the Dar al-Muwaqqit timekeeper's apartment.
