Located just inside the northern gate of Fes el-Bali in Fez, Morocco, the historic Bab Guissa Mosque offers a fascinating glimpse into traditional Moroccan architecture. Originating from the 14th century under the Marinid sultan Abu al-Hasan and later expanded in the 18th century, this medieval site occupies an elevated position that makes its plain minaret a prominent fixture on the city’s northern skyline. As you visit, you can admire the main eastern entrance, which features intricate Moroccan motifs, a carved wooden canopy, and an outdoor ablution gallery decorated with zellij mosaic tiles and Arabic calligraphy.
Inside, the mosque features a spacious central courtyard framed by horseshoe arches. Uniquely, this courtyard is shaded by fig trees alongside its central fountain. The main prayer hall holds carved stucco decoration around the mihrab and geometric stained glass windows.
The complex also encompasses an attached 18th-century madrasa, which historically housed mountain students and remains active, as well as a rare Jama al-Gna'iz funerary annex used specifically for prayers over the deceased prior to burial in the nearby cemetery.
