Located in Munich's Bogenhausen district within Maximilian Park, the Angel of Peace (Friedensengel) is a striking monument perched slightly above street level next to the Isar River. Designed by architects Heinrich Düll, Georg Pezold, and Max Heilmaier, this impressive memorial marks the eastern end of Prinzregentenstrasse's line of sight. It was created to commemorate 25 years of peace following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, with its foundation stone laid in 1896 before its unveiling in 1899.
When you visit, you will encounter an open space featuring Wilhelm von Rümann's Putti Fountain, complete with a central dolphin waterspout surrounded by four smaller jets. Ascend either of the two staircases to reach the elevated observation deck. Here, a 38-meter Corinthian column rises toward the sky, crowned by a six-meter gilded cast bronze statue of the Angel of Peace—a replica of the Nike of Paeonius.
Beneath it, explore a small temple featuring portraits of German emperors, Bavarian rulers, chancellors, and generals. Step inside the temple hall to admire stunning gold mosaics that vividly depict allegories of war, peace, victory, and cultural blessing, making it an inspiring historical stop during your Munich travel adventures.
