Step into Munich, Germany, to discover Fürstenried Palace, an intriguing Baroque maison de plaisance and historic hunting lodge originally built between 1715 and 1717 by Joseph Effner for Elector Maximilian II Emanuel. When you visit, you will encounter a grand three-storey main building featuring two lateral smaller pavilions and adjoining structures set around a central court of honor. A manorial driveway connects this location directly with Nymphenburg Palace.
Over the centuries, Fürstenried has served fascinating roles: a gift to Princess Maria Amalia of Austria, a residence for Electress Maria Anna of Saxony, a military hospital across multiple wars, and the domicile for the ill King Otto of Bavaria from 1883 to 1916. Future Pope Benedict XVI even pondered his priesthood vocation while strolling through its grounds. Today, the complex operates as a pastoral center and spiritual house for the archdiocese.
Outside, you can admire the Baroque garden behind the castle, reconstructed by Carl von Effner. Here, you will see double-row alleys flanking the sightline toward Munich and 110 preserved lime trees, echoing a rich gardening tradition that historically produced peaches, quinces, and foreign plants. Note that inside, only the Blue Cabinet's second-floor wall friezes remain from original interiors.
