Why Anshun

Anshun is a prefecture-level city situated in southwestern Guizhou province in southwest China. Set within a striking karst terrain, the region features elevations spanning from 1,102 to 1,694 meters. It shares borders with the provincial capital of Guiyang as well as Qiannan, Qianxinan, Liupanshui, and Bijie. The area is widely recognized for its dramatic limestone geography, historic settlements, and rich traditional culture.

The region's history extends back to the Warring States period, when it formed part of the independent Yelang kingdom before being incorporated into the Han dynasty in 111 BCE. The name Anshun Prefecture was established during the Ming dynasty to govern the area. Today, the population consists of a Han majority alongside diverse ethnic minority groups. The Tunpo people reside in places like Tianlong Tunbao, where locals preserve Ming-era stone housing, traditional clothing, and customs. Local folk heritage includes Buyi minority wax-resist indigo batiks and Dixi Opera, a centuries-old performance style where actors wear carved wooden masks.

Natural attractions are a major draw across the prefecture. Anshun is famous for Huangguoshu Waterfall, the largest waterfall in Asia, which allows visitors to view the cascading water from multiple angles, including from inside the falls themselves. The Getu River basin offers Miao villages and limestone caverns, including Chuangshang cave reached by climbing 2,000 steps. Guests can also journey up to Longgong Cave to sail past subterranean stalactites and stalagmites, visit the cave-dwelling village of Zhongdong, or explore Huajiang Canyon to view its historical cliffside inscriptions.

Cultural landmarks are scattered across the city and nearby countryside. Within the urban center, the Ming-dynasty Anshun Wenmiao temple complex stands in honor of Confucius. Outside the city in the Tunbao area, Tiantai Mountain hosts a ancient stone architectural complex built in the style of the Song dynasty, where the Ming general Wu Sangui once resided.

Tempered by its elevation, Anshun experiences a humid subtropical climate with warm summers and brief, cool, damp winters. Rainfall is frequent, occurring on more than half the days of the year. The city is connected by the Shanghai–Kunming high-speed railway via Anshun West railway station, the G60 highway, and Anshun Huangguoshu Airport. Many visitors also travel through Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport and reach Anshun via connecting coaches.
