Why Aral
Aral, also recorded as Aralsk, is a small municipality situated in the Kyzylorda Region of southwestern Kazakhstan, where it acts as the administrative seat for Aral District. Historically positioned directly on the shores of the Aral Sea, the city operated as an active harbor and fishing port that distributed seafood across the surrounding region. The local population was recorded as 30,347 during the 1999 census and 29,987 in the 2009 census.
Settlement in the area traces back to 1817 with a village called Alty-Kuduk, meaning Six Wells. The modern town began to take shape alongside the construction of the Orenburg-Tashkent railway between 1899 and 1905, the latter being the year its railway station opened and official local history began. Russian merchants established commercial fishing enterprises and joint-stock ventures in 1905, leading to the establishment of local shipbuilding facilities. The community, centered around the Aralskoye More station, officially attained town status in 1938 when it was integrated into the newly created region.
Geographically, the surrounding waters began receding around 1960 due to Soviet-era river diversions that channeled water away for agricultural irrigation, primarily for cotton crops. Consequently, the town became entirely landlocked. While the shore was once 100 kilometers away, the construction of a dam in 2005 brought the northern remnant of the sea closer, leaving Aral roughly 12 kilometers from the water. The retreating sea ended direct views of the water from the municipality, which reduced the town's socioeconomic role and led to higher unemployment.
Visitors to the area encounter a cold desert climate characterized by severe, frigid winters and hot summers. The surrounding environment carries distinct ecological conditions, as windborne dust from exposed seabed areas affects local public health. Transportation access to the town relies on its long-standing rail connection along the historical track line.
