Arch of Neutrality

When you visit Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, you cannot miss the Monument of Neutrality, a striking 75-meter (246 ft) tall observation tower locally known as "The Tripod." Built in 1998 by the Turkish firm Polimeks for $12 million, it was commissioned by President Saparmurat Niyazov to commemorate the nation's official neutrality. Originally erected in central Ashgabat—where it stood taller than the nearby Presidential Palace—this three-legged arch was dismantled in 2010 under President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow and reassembled in the southern suburbs.

Visiting gives you a firsthand look at what has been called the most notorious symbol of Niyazov's legacy. At the top sits an illuminated 12-meter (39 ft) tall gold-plated statue of Niyazov; while it originally rotated to face the sun, it now remains static following the relocation.

To explore the structure, you can ride inclined elevators built directly into the arch's legs up to a panoramic viewing platform. Beginning in February 2025, the site undergoes renovations for the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan's neutrality, adding updated green spaces, modernized transport infrastructure, an upgraded lighting system, and design elements that reflect the colors of the UN flag.
