Why Ashgabat

Ashgabat is the capital and largest city of Turkmenistan, situated in Central Asia approximately 50 kilometers from the border with Iran. Positioned on an oasis plain subject to high seismic activity, the city is bounded by the foothills of the Köpetdag mountain range to the south and the Karakum Desert to the north. Most of the urban area sits at elevations between 200 and 255 meters, while its highest point reaches 401 meters at the site of the Ýyldyz Hotel. The Soviet-era Karakum Canal flows through the municipality from east to west, bringing water from the Amu Darya.

The locality has deep regional roots, originating near the ancient Silk Road settlement of Konjikala and early Parthian sites. The modern community was formally established in 1881 as a fortified Russian military garrison on the site of an Ahal Teke tribal village. Renamed Poltoratsk for a period between 1919 and 1927, it became the capital of the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic in 1924. A catastrophic earthquake in 1948 leveled almost the entire city. Subsequent reconstruction initially gave the capital a Soviet Brutalist skyline, which was later transformed by a post-independence urban renewal initiative that clad monumental public structures in white marble.

The layout of central Ashgabat maintains an early street plan combining linear and radial grid patterns. Over the decades, urban expansion moved southward toward the Köpetdag foothills and westward, eventually incorporating neighboring farmland, suburbs, and surrounding municipalities such as Abadan and Ruhabat. Today, the city is organized into four main boroughs and encompasses residential microdistricts like Howdan, outer industrial zones, and northern developments around the Gurtly Reservoir, such as Täze Zaman.

Architectural landmarks reflect the capital's varied history, ranging from mid-century Soviet modernism—such as the Mollanepes Academic Drama Theater and the Paytagt Hotel—to modern hillside developments like the Ýyldyz Hotel. Ashgabat experiences a cold arid climate with short, cool winters and exceptionally hot, dry summers where average July daytime high temperatures reach 38.3 °C. Precipitation is minimal, with March and April standing as the wettest months, while the dry season spans from June through September.
