Why Arvada
Arvada is a home rule city situated in Jefferson and Adams counties, Colorado, forming part of the Front Range Urban Corridor and the broader Denver-Aurora-Centennial metropolitan region. Ranking as the seventh most populous municipality in the state, the city spans more than 25,000 acres, which includes over 400 acres of water features. Positioned just northwest of Denver, the city experiences a humid continental climate.
The area's history began with the first documented discovery of gold in the Rocky Mountain region in June 1850, when prospector Lewis Ralston found gold along Ralston Creek. Although early gold seekers eventually moved on, agricultural settlers soon established farms along Clear Creek and Ralston Creek, utilizing extensive irrigation ditch networks to supply produce to the growing regional population. The townsite was laid out in 1870 along the Colorado Central Railroad line under the name Ralston Point before being renamed Arvada and officially incorporating in 1904. During the early twentieth century, Arvada became famous for growing Pascal celery, earning a reputation as the celery capital of the world before evolving into a thriving residential suburb after World War II.
Today, Arvada functions primarily as a residential community complimented by professional offices and light industry. Its historical heart is Olde Town Arvada, located roughly seven miles northwest of the Colorado State Capitol. This historic district features a vibrant mixture of local shops, dining options, and a central transit hub, while major commercial corridors stretch along Wadsworth Boulevard, Ralston Road, and Kipling Street.
Visitors to the area can explore a range of cultural and natural attractions. Key points of interest include the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, the Cussler Museum with its collection of rare automobiles, and Gold Strike Park situated at the historic site of the initial gold discovery. Outdoors enthusiasts can also visit the Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge and the nearby Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge.
Transportation throughout Arvada is supported by extensive road and transit networks. The city marks the western terminus of Interstate 76 and is accessed via State Highways 72, 93, and 95, alongside several major regional freeways. Public transportation is provided by the Regional Transportation District, featuring bus routes and the G Line commuter rail, which connects local stations directly to Denver's Union Station. Air travel is facilitated by Denver International Airport and Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport, while the city's bicycle infrastructure earned it a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community designation in 2014.
