Discovered on a hillside at the corner of Beleza Street and Harriet Avenue, the Asmara Theatre—also known as the Asmara Opera—is a captivating historic landmark built in 1918 by Italian engineer Odoardo Cavagnari and renovated in 1936. As one of the most famous buildings from the Italian colonial era, it offers you a striking architectural mix, blending Romanesque Revival and neoclassicism on the outside with Art Nouveau flourishes within. As you approach, you will ascend a grand monumental staircase flanked by Corinthian-columned Renaissance-style loggias and a shell-shaped fountain.

The building's exterior presents a castle-like design complete with battlements and towers. Stepping inside through the porch and foyer, you can admire the massive 750-spectator auditorium, featuring a parquet floor, three seating levels, and a ceiling painted by Saverio Fresa depicting graceful dance images. The theatre historically hosted famous operas, Pirandello plays, and international musical tours by stars like Renato Rascel.

Today, the state-owned building houses a cozy cafe right in its foyer, making it a wonderful stop to appreciate Asmara's rich cultural heritage and unique architectural legacy.
