Welcome to Atumashi Monastery, formally known as Maha Atulaveyan Kyaungdawgyi, a magnificent Buddhist site in Mandalay, Myanmar. Built in 1857 by King Mindon just two years after relocating the royal capital, this historic landmark offers you a unique look into grand Burmese religious architecture. The original construction cost an impressive 500,000 rupees and featured a massive teak frame coated in stucco.
Unlike traditional monasteries topped with spired pyatthat roofs, Atumashi stands out for its distinctive design, surmounted by five graduated rectangular terraces. When you visit, you will reflect on a dramatic past; in 1890, a devastating city fire destroyed the building alongside complete sets of the Tipitaka scriptures and a massive 30-foot-tall Buddha image. That tragic event also led to the mysterious disappearance of a famed 19.2-carat diamond that adorned the Buddha's forehead, a historic gem originally gifted to King Bodawphaya by the Governor of Arakan.
Though the original structure was lost, the site was reconstructed in 1996 by the nation's Archaeological Department, allowing you to walk among its grand terrace levels and appreciate its peculiar, stately silhouette firsthand today.
