Welcome to Mandalay Palace, also known as Mya Nan San Kyaw or the Great Golden Royal Palace. As the last royal residence of the Burmese monarchy, this historical site was constructed between 1857 and 1859 for King Mindon and later served King Thibaw. Surrounded by a 64-meter-wide moat and a two-kilometer-long walled fort, the single-storey buildings at the citadel’s center face east, featuring multi-tiered spires that historically signaled the importance of each space.

Although British occupation in 1885 ended its royal role and World War II bombings destroyed most structures, original landmarks like the royal mint and watchtower survived. In the 1990s, a replica was rebuilt using a mix of modern materials like concrete and corrugated metal alongside traditional designs. When you explore the sprawling grounds, you can see key architectural structures including the Clock Tower, Tooth-Relic Tower, Great Audience Hall, and the Lion Throne.

Keep in mind that earthquake damage in 2025 damaged parts of the complex. Visiting this primary symbol of Mandalay offers you a deep look into Myanmar’s royal heritage, classic citadel design, and resilient historic identity.
