Why Aurora

Aurora is an expansive city situated in eastern Colorado within Arapahoe, Adams, and Douglas counties. Positioned along the Front Range Urban Corridor directly adjacent to Denver, the municipality covers more than 104,000 acres of terrain. Its topography exhibits significant elevation variation, rising from 5,285 feet along Sand Creek in the northwest to 6,229 feet along its southern border.

Originally the ancestral domain of the Arapaho, Cheyenne, Ute, and Sioux nations, the area became part of the United States through the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. The community was established in 1890 as the town of Fletcher by Denver businessman Donald Fletcher. Following economic hardship after the 1893 Silver Crash, the town incorporated in 1903 and was renamed Aurora in 1907. Throughout the twentieth century, military operations shaped the city's development, including former bases like Lowry Air Force Base and Fitzsimons Army Hospital, as well as Buckley Space Force Base, which continues to operate as a major facility.

Today, Aurora features a diverse demographic profile and serves as a home to vibrant international communities and refugee populations. Visitors can explore local cultural spots such as La Plaza, which stands as the largest Hispanic food hall in the United States, or visit commercial hubs like Stanley Marketplace and large venue destinations like the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center. The city also accommodates foreign consulates for El Salvador and Honduras. The former Fitzsimons military grounds have been transformed into the Anschutz Medical Campus and Life Science District.

For outdoor recreation, the area offers expansive green spaces, including Cherry Creek State Park located on the city's southwestern edge. Aurora is also recognized for its athletic facilities, centered around the Aurora Sports Park. This venue hosts over 30 regional and national sports tournaments annually, earning the city recognition for its strong sports programming.

Aurora experiences a semi-arid climate characterized by four distinct seasons and light precipitation throughout the year. Summers are warm to hot, with average July high temperatures reaching 89 degrees Fahrenheit alongside frequent afternoon thunderstorms and hailstorms. Winters alternate between mild sun and cold snaps with snowfall, recording average December highs of 43 degrees Fahrenheit. The regular snowfall season spans from late October through late April.
