Why Avondale

Located in Maricopa County, Arizona, Avondale is a growing suburban city situated directly adjacent to Phoenix. Encompassing nearly 48 square miles, the community shares borders with Goodyear to the west, Litchfield Park to the north, and both Tolleson and Phoenix to the east. The local landscape is defined in part by its waterways, as the Gila River flows through the southern section of the municipality where it connects with the Agua Fria River arriving from the north.

The settlement began in the late nineteenth century when William "Billy" G. Moore settled along the Agua Fria River, establishing a stage stop known as Coldwater in the 1880s. This early outpost supplied travelers journeying between Tucson, northern Arizona, and California. The area eventually adopted the name Avondale from a local ranch and officially incorporated as a town in 1946. Long sustained by alfalfa farming, cotton fields, and railroad commerce, the community evolved from a small rural township into a major residential suburb. Old Town along Western Avenue maintains this historic character, providing a dedicated space for small, independent businesses.

A significant historical landmark within the city is Monument Hill, situated at the intersection of Baseline Road and 115th Avenue. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this location features the surveying marker for the Gila and Salt River Meridian. Since 1851, this site has served as the official central reference point for land surveys across Arizona, playing a crucial role in determining property boundaries following the Mexican-American War.

Sports and outdoor recreation are central to the city's local offerings. Avondale is home to Phoenix Raceway, a one-mile oval track established in 1964 that hosts major motorsport competitions including NASCAR and IndyCar events. For leisure and community activities, the city manages a network of public parks, such as Friendship Park, Festival Fields, Alamar Park, and Las Ligas, alongside several smaller neighborhood green spaces situated throughout the town.

Avondale experiences a hot desert climate characterized by year-round sunshine. Winters feature mild daytime temperatures ranging from 60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, while summers bring daily high temperatures that consistently reach or exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The summer months can also bring occasional dust storms and rainfall associated with the North American Monsoon. Transportation access is provided by Interstate 10, which passes through the northern part of the city approximately 15 miles west of downtown Phoenix.
