Why Bac Beag
Bac Beag is an uninhabited Scottish island situated in the Inner Hebrides region of the United Kingdom. It is one of the landmasses that forms the Treshnish Isles archipelago. The island's Gaelic name translates in part to "small," distinguishing it from its larger neighbouring island, Bac Mòr. The term "Bac" in its name can be interpreted in Gaelic as either a bank, an obstacle, or a hindrance.
Geographically, Bac Beag is located at the south-western terminus of the Treshnish Isles chain, positioned to the south of the island of Lunga. Unlike the more prominent profile of Bac Mòr, Bac Beag is characterized by a low-lying and relatively flat terrain. Like its surrounding islands, it is of volcanic origin.
Administratively and environmentally, the island is owned by the Hebridean Trust, a charitable organization. Bac Beag holds no human population, allowing it to serve as a sanctuary for wildlife. Along with the rest of the Treshnish Isles, it is officially designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Protection Area, recognized primarily for its environmental importance as a breeding ground for seabirds.
