Why Baoji

Baoji is a major prefecture-level city in western Shaanxi province, recognized as the second largest city in the region since the early 1990s. Situated in a valley surrounded by hills on three sides that opens to the east, the city occupies a strategic position controlling a vital pass across the Qin Mountains between the Jialing River and the Wei River valley. Covering an area of 18,159 square kilometers, the broader prefecture is home to over three million residents.

With human settlement extending back to 2000 BC and significant expansion occurring during the Tang dynasty, Baoji possesses deep historical roots. The area is traditionally recognized as the home of Yandi, a legendary ancestor of the Han Chinese whose tomb and temple are situated in the southern and northern parts of the city respectively. Historically, the Northern Silk Road traversed the area, helping establish Baoji as a crucial gateway linking eastern and western China.

Visitors interested in heritage will find numerous ancient sites throughout the prefecture. The Baoji Bronze Museum houses more than 120,000 cultural artifacts, primarily originating from the Zhou dynasty. In nearby Fufeng County, Famen Temple contains a historic finger bone of Buddha. Approximately 20 kilometers from the city, Zhuge Liang's Memorial Temple provides a point of interest for those fascinated by the Three Kingdoms era, while several ancient Longshan archaeological sites lie to the north of the Wei River.

The surrounding geography offers distinct natural and historical landscapes. South of the city, Mount Taibai retains decayed remnants of ancient wooden plank pathways constructed along mountain precipices during the Three Kingdoms period. The area south of Baoji also features the start of the Qin Mountains plank road as well as the Jialing Jiang Fountainhead, an area marked by forests and small waterfalls. To the north, the large loess hill of Bei Puo provides panoramic views over the city alongside agricultural villages serving regional food.

Baoji is well-connected through an extensive transport network. Its main railway stations include Baoji South, which operates on high-speed lines connecting Xi'an, Lanzhou, and Xinjiang, alongside the main Baoji station serving major conventional lines. Furthermore, national expressways and highways connect the city to regional hubs and the Xi'an Xianyang International Airport.
