Why Baoshan
Baoshan, historically referred to as Yongchang, is a prefecture-level city situated in western Yunnan Province, China. Ranked as the second-largest metropolitan area in western Yunnan after Dali, the prefecture spans a geographically diverse landscape shaped by prominent rivers and international borders. It is situated between the Lancang River, also known as the Mekong, and the border with Myanmar. To the northwest, the prefecture touches Myanmar's Kachin State, while Shan State borders it to the south. The Nujiang, or Salween River, flows directly through the entire prefecture from north to south.
Benefiting from a low latitude and moderate elevation, Baoshan experiences a mild subtropical highland climate. Winters are brief, dry, and gentle; although frost can occur, daytime temperatures regularly warm up to around 16 to 17 °C, with January registering an average temperature of 9.1 °C. Summers are warm and rainy, reaching a peak monthly average of 21.5 °C in June. Nearly three-quarters of the prefecture's annual precipitation falls during the wet period from June to October.
Administratively, Baoshan governs five subdivisions consisting of a district, three counties, and a county-level city. The urban center of Tengyue within the Tengchong area achieved city status and has been in the process of separating administratively from Baoshan. The total resident population stands at approximately 2.5 million people. The Han population makes up roughly ninety percent of the residents, while ethnic minority groups account for around ten percent. These include the Bulang people, who reside across specific village areas in Shidian and Changning counties, as well as the Yaojing subgroup of the De'ang minority, located within Lujiang Township in Longyang District.
Transportation to and across Baoshan is facilitated by modern highway, air, and developing rail networks. The city lies along the completed highway extending from Kunming to Ruili on the Myanmar border, forming the first completed highway connection between China and Myanmar. Air transit is served by Baoshan Yunrui Airport, which provides daily commercial flights to and from Kunming. Additionally, the Dali–Ruili railway line is under construction through the area, where Baoshan railway station will accommodate passenger traffic and Baoshan North will service freight.
