Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Merced 🇵🇪

Located in the historic center of Lima on Jirón de la Unión, the Basilica and Priory of Nuestra Señora de la Merced offers you an incredible look into Peru's deep colonial history and art. First established in 1535, this historic adobe and brick church features an intricate, carved stone entrance built in the distinctive Liman Churrigueresque Baroque style.

As you step inside, you will discover a three-nave interior centered around a striking, fire-gilded altarpiece that houses the venerated statue of the Virgin of Mercy, adorned with a gold scepter, shackles, and a scapular. Beyond the main sanctuary, you can explore three peaceful cloisters, including the main cloister featuring corner altars with azulejos baseboards and series of historical paintings detailing the life of Saint Peter Nolasco.

Wander past the monumental staircase covered by a dome to find the library, which houses colonial religious books alongside the chair of Venerable Friar Pedro Urraca. Be sure to seek out the sacristy to view the historic Cross of the Conquest brought by Mercedarian friars, the grave inscription of Friar Pedro Urraca set in the floor, and the statue of the Holy Christ of Help.
