Puruchuco 🇵🇪

Located in the Ate District of Lima along kilometer 4.5 of the Central Highway, Puruchuco offers you a direct window into Peru's ancient history. Built during the Inca period between 1438 and 1533, this archaeological complex once served as an administrative center and the palace of a local curaca, or ruler, who lived and managed from here while answering to higher authorities. Though it is the smallest complex in the area compared to nearby sites like San Juan de Pariachi and Huaycán, Puruchuco holds significant historical value.

As you explore the sector of Huaquerones, you will encounter a fascinating land of pyramids with ramps and one of the largest known Inca cemeteries, which archaeologists have recently studied. You can also visit South America’s very first site museum of its kind, established after restoration work by Dr. Francisco Iriarte Brenner and Dr.

Arturo Jiménez Borja between 1953 and 1961. When you visit, keep in mind an honest perspective: various structures have fallen into disrepair, suffered severe vandalism, and faced graffiti near the Monumental Stadium, while surrounding construction continues to impact neighboring areas. Despite these challenges, visiting Puruchuco gives you a unique look at Inca administrative life right inside Lima.
