Why Beaumont

Beaumont is a regional city in Southeast Texas, situated along the west bank of the Neches River approximately 85 miles east of Houston and about 30 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico. Resting on the flat coastal plain near the dense forests of the Piney Woods, it serves as the seat of Jefferson County. Together with the nearby communities of Port Arthur and Orange, Beaumont forms an industrial region known as the Golden Triangle.

Originally settled in the 1820s as Tevis Bluff or the Neches River Settlement, the town was formally established in 1838 and named in honor of Mary Dewburleigh Barlace Warren Beaumont. Early growth was driven by real estate, cattle, lumber, and river transport along the Port of Beaumont. In 1892, local entrepreneur Joseph Eloi Broussard introduced the state's first successful commercial rice mill, helping transform the surrounding countryside into a major rice-producing zone. The city's economic landscape shifted dramatically in 1901 with the discovery of the massive Spindletop oil field, which sparked a population boom and established the area as a prominent center for petrochemical refining.

Visitors to Beaumont can explore a rich architectural heritage, particularly in the downtown core and historic neighborhoods. Prominent landmarks include the 254-foot Edison Plaza, the historic San Jacinto Building featuring a notable four-faced clock tower, the vintage Hotel Beaumont, and the Art Deco Jefferson County Courthouse. Performance venues such as the Jefferson Theatre, built in 1927, and the Julie Rogers Theater offer cultural spaces, while the restored storefront of the Kyle Building showcases distinctive Zig-Zag style architecture. Neighborhoods like the Oaks Historic District preserve numerous restored historic homes, and the Tyrrell Historical Library occupies a converted historic church building donated during the oil boom era.

The city is also home to Lamar University, a major doctoral research institution. Beaumont experiences a humid subtropical climate with a wet period spanning from April to October and a drier season between November and March. It receives over 65 inches of annual rainfall, making it one of the wettest areas in Texas, and is periodically subject to tropical storms and hurricanes.
