Why Belgrade

Belgrade, the historic capital and largest urban center of Serbia, is situated in Southeast Europe where the Sava River meets the Danube. Located at the junction of the Balkan Peninsula and the Pannonian Plain, it ranks among the most populous cities along the Danube. Known historically by its Serbian name meaning "White City," Belgrade serves as the nation's primary administrative, corporate, and governmental hub.

Recognized as one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited urban areas, the surrounding region contains evidence of human activity dating back to prehistoric foraging societies. Subsequent agricultural communities, including the Starčevo and Vinča cultures, established major settlements in the area, developing early European copper metallurgy and anthropomorphic figurines. Later populated by Thraco-Dacians, the site was settled around 279 BC by Celts who named their fortress Singidūn. Under Roman administration, the town became Singidunum before passing to the Byzantine Empire and maintaining a bridge link to Taurunum, present-day Zemun.

Throughout the Middle Ages, ownership of the city shifted between Byzantine, Bulgarian, and Hungarian rule until King Stefan Dragutin established it as a Serbian seat in 1284. It later served as the capital of the Serbian Despotate under Stefan Lazarević, who built a castle whose Despot's tower still stands. Following a Christian defense against Ottoman forces in 1456—commemorated worldwide by daily noon church bells—the fortress was conquered by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1521. Ottoman rule introduced Oriental architecture, including mosques and bazaars, while subsequent conflicts between Ottoman and Habsburg forces led to repeated destruction over the following centuries.

Reestablished as Serbia's capital in 1841 and later serving as the capital of Yugoslavia, Belgrade expanded across the river to incorporate Zemun in 1918. Its architectural evolution incorporates Balkan, Neoclassical, Baroque, and Eclectic styles, visible in historic structures such as the 1840 Cathedral of Saint Archangel Michael. Another prominent architectural feature is the Church of Saint Sava, constructed on the Vračar plateau where Ottoman forces burned the saint's relics in 1594.

As a Beta-Global City, Belgrade contains prominent national institutions alongside large-scale modern facilities like the Belgrade Arena and the University Clinical Centre of Serbia. The city has hosted numerous international gatherings and sporting events, including the first Non-Aligned Movement Summit, the Eurovision Song Contest, and European basketball championships, with plans to host a specialized world exhibition in 2027.
