Why Bellingham
Bellingham is a coastal city and the county seat of Whatcom County in northwestern Washington State. Situated along Bellingham Bay, which opens to the Strait of Georgia, the city lies roughly 18 to 21 miles south of the Canada–United States border, approximately 50 to 52 miles southeast of Vancouver, British Columbia, and 90 miles north of Seattle. Positioned west of Mount Baker and Lake Whatcom, and north of the Chuckanut Mountains, Bellingham is the northernmost city in the contiguous United States with a population exceeding 90,000.
The region around Bellingham Bay has been inhabited for millennia by Coast Salish Indigenous groups, including the Lummi, Nooksack, Samish, and Nuwhaha peoples. European settlement expanded in the 1850s following the construction of a lumber mill along Whatcom Creek and the discovery of coal. The city was officially incorporated on December 28, 1903, through the merger of four local towns: Whatcom, Sehome, Fairhaven, and Bellingham. Over time, local economic focus shifted away from coal mining and cannery operations, leading to the historical preservation of districts like Fairhaven and the ongoing mixed-use redevelopment of former waterfront industrial areas.
Bellingham features dozens of unique neighborhoods, including the Downtown Central Business District, Silver Beach, Edgemoor, and Whatcom Falls. The city is home to Western Washington University, which expanded from a teachers' college established in the 1930s into a university by 1977. Prominent landscape elements include Whatcom Creek running through the city center, nearby Galbraith Mountain, and views of Mount Baker. Travel connections are supported by the Bellingham International Airport and the southern terminus of the Alaska Marine Highway.
Geography strongly dictates Bellingham's mild weather patterns, as the Cascade Range shields it from continental conditions and the Olympic Mountains provide a rain shadow. The area receives an average annual precipitation of roughly 34.8 inches, with most rain occurring between October and April. Although it records the lowest average sunshine of any U.S. city, summer temperatures rarely exceed 90 °F (32 °C). During the winter, cold Arctic air blowing from Canada's Fraser River canyon can occasionally create freezing conditions, which are often followed by warm southern winds known as the Pineapple Express.
