Why Biloxi
Biloxi is a city located in Harrison County along the Gulf Coast in southern Mississippi, directly bordering Gulfport to its west. Bordered by the Mississippi Sound to the south and partially by Biloxi Bay to the northeast, the city forms part of a larger metropolitan region. Offshore, barrier islands lie scattered in the Gulf of Mexico, while the Back Bay of Biloxi, Big Lake, and the Biloxi and Tchoutacabouffa rivers define its inland water geography.
The area was first inhabited by the local Bilocci Native American tribe before French colonists established a presence at nearby Fort Maurepas in 1699. Biloxi itself was settled in 1720 around Fort Louis and briefly served as the administrative capital of French Louisiana. Control of the region transitioned to Great Britain in 1763, to Spain in 1779, and eventually to the United States, with Mississippi joining the union in 1817. Biloxi grew into a prominent 19th-century summer destination, aided by water access from New Orleans and later by expanded rail lines. A major seafood canning industry emerged in 1881, processing shrimp and oysters and attracting a diverse population of European immigrants.
Modern Biloxi is widely recognized for its coastal gaming and resort industry, hosting notable casino establishments such as the Beau Rivage, Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Golden Nugget, Harrah's Gulf Coast, IP Casino Resort Spa, Palace Casino Resort, Boomtown Casino, and Treasure Bay Casino. Visitors can explore the historic Biloxi Lighthouse, completed in 1848, or visit the Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art, designed by architect Frank Gehry. Six historic districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places preserve a variety of late 19th- and early 20th-century architectural styles, including Queen Anne, Art Deco, and Colonial Revival. The city also features sports venues like Keesler Federal Park, home to the Biloxi Shuckers baseball team, and the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. Cultural traditions include the annual Blessing of the Fleet, which began in 1929 to mark the start of the shrimp season, and events tied to the local Order of Mithras Carnival Association.
Biloxi experiences a humid subtropical climate influenced by the Gulf of Mexico, characterized by hot, humid summers and mild, wet winters. Snow is extremely rare, though the area is subject to tropical storms and hurricanes during late summer and autumn. The city is also home to Keesler Air Force Base.
