Why Bird Island
Bird Island, also known in Spanish as Isla Pájaro, is a narrow landmass measuring 4.8 kilometres in length and 800 metres across. It is situated at the western end of South Georgia, separated from the main island by Bird Sound. Administratively, it forms part of the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, though it is also claimed by Argentina as part of its Tierra del Fuego province.
The island was first encountered by Europeans in 1775 during a British expedition led by James Cook, who named it after the immense bird populations observed there. The summit of the island is Roché Peak, named for Anthony de la Roché, who discovered South Georgia in 1675. Another notable elevation is the 290-metre Tickell Peak, named after Lance Tickell, an early scientist who studied local seal and albatross populations starting in the late 1950s and became one of the first individuals to overwinter there. Biological studies expanded around this time with United States funding, leading to bird-tagging initiatives between 1959 and 1962 that revealed vast travel ranges, including one wandering albatross tracked to Australia.
A research facility operated by the British Antarctic Survey has been active at Jordan Cove since 1963. Staffed by three biologists and a technician, the station focuses on monitoring the ecology and populations of local seabirds and seals. During the 1982 conflict and occupation at Grytviken, the station remained under British control alongside field camps at Schlieper Bay, Lyell Glacier, and St. Andrews Bay.
The island is renowned for its high concentration of wildlife. It supports approximately 65,000 Antarctic fur seals, resulting in an average density of roughly one seal for every six square metres. Bird life is equally prolific, featuring 50,000 macaroni penguins, 15,000 pairs of black-browed albatrosses, 12,000 pairs of grey-headed albatrosses, 1,700 pairs of wandering albatrosses, and 500 pairs of southern giant petrels. Additional residents include gentoo penguins, South Georgia pintails, and South Georgia pipits, with 27 of South Georgia’s 31 breeding bird species present. Offshore, southern right whales and other cetaceans frequent the surrounding waters during their feeding season. Unlike the main island of South Georgia, Bird Island has continuously remained free of rats.
Due to its environmental value, Bird Island is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and general landings are strictly prohibited without permission. Farewell Point forms the northeastern extremity of the island.
