Why Birendranagar
Birendranagar is a major city in the Surkhet District of Karnali Province, Nepal. Positioned within the Surkhet Valley along the northern bank of the Bheri River, it serves as both the provincial capital and the district headquarters. Surrounded by hills, the area features views of the Mahabharata and Chure mountain ranges alongside the plains of the inner Terai. It is notable for being the first planned town in Nepal, established and named in honor of the late King Birendra, and designated as the provincial capital in February 2018.
Historically inhabited by the Tharu and local Raji communities, Birendranagar has grown through migration from nearby mountain areas and other parts of the country. It functions as a prominent economic hub and central market for mid-western Nepal, serving as the main food supplier for rural parts of the province and a primary shopping destination for neighboring districts such as Dailekh, Jajarkot, and Achham. The city is also a significant regional center for healthcare and education, housing institutions like the Provincial Hospital, District Hospital, and Mid-Western University.
Visitors to Birendranagar can explore several cultural, historic, and recreational sites. On a hillock in the middle of the valley lies Kakre Bihar, an archaeological site featuring the ruins of a 12th-century stone temple that reflects a blend of Hindu and Buddhist traditions, displaying carved images of the Buddha alongside deities such as Ganesh and Saraswati. Another notable religious site is Deuti Bajai, a national heritage Hindu temple with historical ties to the Raji community. In the southern part of the city, Bulbule Tal is a popular recreation park featuring a lake where visitors can participate in boating, fishing, and swimming. Historical artifacts, sculptures, and cultural exhibits related to the Raji ethnic group and Kakre Bihar are showcased in the regional city museum.
Travelers reach Birendranagar via the Ratna Highway and Karnali Highway, which connect the city to major destinations across Nepal including Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Nepalgunj. Long-distance buses and taxis operate regularly along these routes. Domestic air service is available through Surkhet Airport, located east of the city, offering direct flights to Kathmandu as well as remote mountain districts such as Jumla, Humla, Dolpa, and Mugu.
